Drafted

1951 April - August

While still in the hospital from the motorcycle wreck he received his draft notice to report ... for duty, during the Korean War. Grandpa Miller tried to explain to the officials that he was in no shape to report; but they refused to excuse him from duty stating that if he needed hospitalization or treatment they would see to it that he got the best the Army could offer at their hospitals. When it came time to report to the local bus station, May 1951, Dad was home from the hospital recovering, still under doctor's care. The evidence of his injuries were obvious and caused him to have a slowness of speech and in his reaction time. The US Army took him to Maryland to their hospital. After Grandpa made several attemps to get him out, Dad was finally ... released with a medical discharge in August 1951. Grandpa Miller kept fighting until he finally got that changed to an honorable discharge. I remember Dad saying he didn't realize it at the time but his draft probably saved his life. Because the medical care he received in Maryland was state of the art compared to what was available to him in Chillicothe at the time.
