Dad attended elementary school at the Washington Township School in Wellston, Ohio. During the second grade, April 1938, Daddy had the misfortune of falling out of the hay loft and broke his collar bone. He was unable to attend school for the most of that term and still managed to make the honor roll. This poem was on the cover of the school newsletter in April 1938: "Don't Just Get By" by Mildred Morris Go ahead "Don't just get by" On the future fix you eye. Never look upon a task as merely something to get through; Everything you undertake Gives a chance for you to make Headway on the road to progress, and it's strickly up to you. Get ahead "Don't just get by" You can do it if you try. To excel in every minor job to which you set your hand; That of merit it will tell And you soon will find a higher salary at your command. Get ahead "Don't just get by" In all dilligence apply. Your endeavor to preparing for the bigger things that wait; Study, train, and persevere Keep your mind alert and clear And you'll travel to advancement at a sure and steady rate. Daddy took this advice and did very well!
