Dad wanted to learn how to swim, so he asked his dad how did you learn to swim Dad? Grandpa explained that Uncle Ben had taught him how to swim by throwing him in over his head ... it was sink or swim... he chose to swim. Dad didn't care much for that idea but still wanted to learn how to swim. His best friend was Wayne Neff. (We always called him Uncle Wayne, because he and dad were as close as brothers growing up.) Anyway, Dad decided to ask his friend for advice on learning how to swim. Wayne told him to jump off a local bridge, into Walnut Creek, and when you come up you'll be swimming. Dad stood out on the edge but was still too scared to jump, the bridge was just too high. So Wayne convinced him that if he'd get down there underneath the bridge and hang down from one of the rafter like supports he'd almost be to the water and wouldn't have so far to fall. He did... but out of fear he just couldn't let go. However, it didn't take long for gravity to cause his hands to slip and down he went. He said he went down so far that he could feel the sand between his toes when he touched bottom, but just like Wayne had said he came up swimming. Could he ever swim... just like a fish...once the fear was gone. He swam different from everyone else though....you couldn't see him but you would hear... Kathump... Kathump. The explaination for the sound was quite simple actually ... one foot would always come out of the water making the Kathump sound as it went back down. (The strange thing about this story is that Matt and I both swim the same way... Kathump ... Kathump. LOL)
